Burning Dates & Requirements

Before burning it is important to know where you reside or are burning; inside city limits (incorporated) or in the county (unincorporated) as different rules and dates apply, and different permits are required. For inside city limits (incorporated) there are 2 burn periods governed by the Department of Air Quality (DAQ). Spring, April 1-May 31 and Fall, Sept 15-Oct 31. During these periods a burn permit is issued by DAQ. For the county (unincorporated), burning is permitted year-round. During the State’s Closed Fire Season, June 1-Oct 31 a permit is required, issued by the Utah Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands (FFSL). Whether a permit is required or not, notifying Dispatch of your burn before starting is required 100% of the time.

You are responsible for any costs incurred if the fire department is called to your property to control a fire that has not been reported to dispatch or has gotten out of control, so please follow all instructions and have a safe burn.

Certain and specific burning operations may be exempt from requiring permit during closed fire season. See the ** below.
